Guitar Lessons

Steven Dearing began teaching guitar in 1992 while finishing up his undergraduate degree with a split between Music Education and Guitar Performance. Within two years he found himself tutoring guitar students seven days a week with 62 guitarists in his studio. He taught at Academy St Cecile before moving to Michigan using the Royal Conservatory of Music method, a graded guitar course where students progress on a gradient level with not only guitar skills, but with music theory, music history, ear training and technical skills. Many of Steven’s former and current students have won medals for achieving the highest marks in the province of Ontario on their Royal Conservatory of Music exams.

In 1995 Steven joined the music faculty at The University of Windsor becoming an Adjunct Professor. Over the years members of his studio have won scholarships for highest grades on their performing exams (juries) in the strings division, and some have won the annual concerto competition being selected to perform with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Others have won scholarships to go on to Masters degrees at some of North America’s finest music schools.

Although Steven’s forte is classical guitar performance, he also helps other guitarists gain a better ability of their chosen style of guitar through understanding music theory and technique. Steven grew up as an electric guitarist playing rock and heavy metal, and today can be heard playing both classical guitar and leading a contemporary music band at his church.

If you have found yourself struggling on the guitar for a while, wondering why you are stumped and can’t get over the next hurdle, or if you have tried to learn the guitar on your own by watching youtube videos and now find that you really don’t understand what you are doing, give Steven a call or email to see if he can be of help. Lesson slots are based on availability and a short playing audition.

If you have been playing guitar for a while and find yourself pondering these questions:

  • Why am I stuck – how do I get over the next hurdle?
  • How can I learn to read music fluidly?
  • Why do I feel limited in my technique?
  • Why is my tone inconsistent?
  • How do I learn music theory and apply it to the fretboard?
  • Why can’t I improvise?

Maybe it’s time to try taking lessons with an educated guitarist. Learning online has limitations.
